The Townsville Eco Fiesta and Smart Lifestyle Expo is a free two-day community festival that focuses on sustainability and the environment. Held in Queens Gardens, North Ward, it includes the Townsville Environmental Awards, live entertainment and sustainability workshops.
As I said last year, the festival was hippie-alternative in its first years but it has drifted towards commercialisation even as the mainstream has begun to embrace the whole greenie thing, and the festival is now almost mainstream. Music and kids’ activities complement displays and trade stands for community environmental groups, natural therapies, solar power and more, making it a great family day.
21 Years of Eco Fiesta!
2013 is the Eco Fiesta and Smart Lifestyle Expo’s 21st birthday. The Townsville Eco Fiesta commenced in 1992 and was joined by the Smart Lifestyle Expo in 2008. The 2012 event attracted over 15,000 visitors over its two days.
Ethical Eco Fashion Clothes Swap
This year, council is hosting an Ethical Eco Fashion Clothes Swap. Get involved! Dig out those clothes from your wardrobe you no longer wear and bring them to the Eco Fiesta on Saturday 1 June and your trash could become someone else’s treasure. You could pick up something nice for yourself in return.
This year the Eco Fiesta is hosting musical heavy-weights Pacha Mama, Dana Lyons and Mama Kin on the Entertainment Stage.
The information above is largely from the Townsville City Council website; visit it for more details, including the full entertainment programme, or ring the council on 1300 878 001. I went last year (in fact I have been to it most years, including the first) and reported briefly on it here.
