Green-ant mating flight

Exactly three years ago I posted an article about the queen green-ants I saw on Magnetic Island the day before. They were the first I had seen, and I hadn’t seen any since then until I fished three or four of them out of my swimming pool this morning. They weren’t at their best after their swim so you will have to visit this page for photos.

I looked around my garden for living queens but failed to find any, so all I know of this emergence is that it happened some time in the last 24 hours. I would be interested to hear from readers who have seen more.

  1. Over the past 2 weeks, we’ve had queen green ants popping up in our kitchen in Proserpine. One afternoon there were 2, the following morning there were a dozen and then two more instances of 2 and 4. There’s been increased worker activity outside the house, but they hadn’t ventured in until tonight when there were hundreds of workers and a single queen.

    1. Thanks, Joe. In your position I think I would be moving the queen and her entourage out of the house before they found a place to make a nest … not that I’ve ever known them to nest indoors, but I guess they could sew curtains together just as they sew leaves together.
